Abstract

This comprehensive review analyzes the symbiotic relationship between blockchain technology and the evolution of the Internet. The paper examines the history of the Internet’s centralized growth and positions blockchain as a corrective measure to address privacy, security, and data ownership concerns. The authors categorize applications across identity management, domain naming systems, and decentralized web storage, illustrating how cryptographically secured ledgers empower users to reclaim ownership of their digital footprint. By synthesizing existing literature, the review highlights the emergence of decentralized applications (dApps) as the vanguard of this new paradigm. Furthermore, it addresses the energy consumption issues associated with traditional consensus mechanisms, suggesting that shift towards Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and energy-efficient algorithms is critical for long-term viability.
