Abstract

This survey paper evaluates the security landscape of the Internet of Things (IoT), mapping out the complex requirements and potential solutions necessary to protect modern connected ecosystems. The authors conduct a comprehensive review of existing attack surfaces, ranging from physical device tampering to network-level threats, and analyze the efficacy of current defensive strategies. A significant portion of the analysis is dedicated to the role of blockchain technology and other cryptographic primitives in providing immutable audit trails and decentralized trust mechanisms. The paper highlights the disconnect between high security requirements and the limited processing power of IoT devices, proposing a taxonomy of security solutions that balance protection with operational efficiency. By investigating the intersection of IoT with emerging paradigms like edge computing and cloud integration, the authors provide a rigorous foundation for researchers and practitioners to design more robust, resilient, and secure IoT architectures. Key findings

  • IoT security requires a multi-layered approach involving hardware, network, and application-level protection.
  • Blockchain serves as an immutable foundation for maintaining audit logs and verifying device integrity.
  • Resource constraints in IoT devices necessitate lightweight security protocols to prevent performance bottlenecks.
  • Proactive threat detection must be integrated into decentralized architectures to counter sophisticated adversarial attacks.
