Abstract

This foundational whitepaper provides an in-depth analysis of the shift toward Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) as a solution for digital identity. It critiques the current system of identity management, where central authorities (governments, banks, and big tech) serve as the ‘gatekeepers’ of our digital lives, often holding massive databases that are vulnerable to exploitation. The research introduces the decentralized identity model, where individuals possess the credentials to prove their identity—such as age, professional certification, or citizenship—without needing to rely on a central intermediary for authentication. The paper details the core technical components, including Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and the W3C standards that enable global interoperability. It argues that this technological shift is critical for the evolution of the internet, transforming it into a space where users are the primary owners of their digital reputation.
