Privacy preserving transparent supply chain management through Hyperledger Fabric

This paper explores the tension between transparency and data privacy within supply chain management, specifically leveraging the Hyperledger Fabric framework.

Abstract

This paper explores the tension between transparency and data privacy within supply chain management, specifically leveraging the Hyperledger Fabric framework. The researchers address the challenge of providing product history to consumers while protecting the competitive secrets of manufacturers and distributors. Through a prototype implementation, the study demonstrates the efficacy of using channel partitioning and private data collections to ensure that sensitive business information remains confidential even on a shared ledger. The methodology involves a performance analysis of transaction throughput under varying privacy constraints. The results indicate that Hyperledger’s modular architecture provides sufficient flexibility to balance the conflicting requirements of public transparency and private enterprise logic. This research is significant for enterprise environments that prioritize confidentiality without sacrificing the benefits of immutable record-keeping. Authors: S. S. Khatoon, A. A. Khan, Y. H. Key findings

  • Hyperledger Fabric allows for granular control over data visibility via channels.
  • Balancing transparency and privacy is feasible through private data collections.
  • Performance trade-offs exist when scaling privacy-preserving mechanisms.
  • Modular blockchain architectures are well-suited for competitive enterprise environments.
