Abstract

This paper explores a specific pilot project conducted with the University Health Network (UHN) regarding the management of patient health records using blockchain. It highlights the problem of data silos in the healthcare system, where patient records are fragmented across multiple institutions and inaccessible to the patients themselves. The authors describe how a blockchain-based platform can empower patients with ownership of their personal health data, allowing them to provide granular, temporary access to healthcare providers. This research assesses the technical, security, and interoperability hurdles of creating a unified patient-centric repository. It emphasizes the importance of secure identity management and HIPAA-compliant data access in the health sector. The findings suggest that decentralizing access control can significantly improve patient outcomes by ensuring providers have a comprehensive view of a patient’s medical history while maintaining strict privacy and security standards.
