## Abstract

Focusing on the evolution of infrastructure stacks, this paper explores the shift toward modularity in DePIN architectures. The author posits that the monolithic designs of early DePIN projects are insufficient for scaling to mass-market adoption. By advocating for an architectural split between the execution, data availability, and settlement layers—similar to the modular blockchain thesis—the paper outlines how DePINs can leverage off-chain computation and specialized state availability layers. The research details how ZK-proofs and verifiable delay functions can optimize the hardware validation process, reducing the on-chain burden and increasing throughput. The study concludes that modular infrastructure is the key to achieving performance metrics required for mission-critical services like real-time mapping or smart city connectivity. This analysis serves as a roadmap for builders aiming to utilize emerging cryptographic primitives to create more performant and capital-efficient decentralized physical networks, effectively moving from high-latency settlement to high-speed asynchronous processing.

## Key findings

* Monolithic DePIN architectures struggle with scalability and hardware-heavy transaction costs.
* Modular design allows for the specialization of validation layers in physical infrastructure.
* Zero-knowledge proofs improve the efficiency of machine-data verification.
* Off-chain computation is necessary for real-time infrastructure management.
