Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive empirical analysis of the NFT market, utilizing a large dataset of over six million trades across multiple platforms. The authors investigate the network structure of NFT transactions, the distribution of wealth among collectors, and the relationship between visual characteristics and market value. By employing statistical analysis and machine learning techniques, the paper identifies power-law distributions in market activity and reveals how specific visual traits influence asset pricing. This research is pivotal for understanding the systemic behavior of decentralized digital asset markets and serves as a foundational reference for the growth and volatility observed in the 2020-2021 NFT cycle. The study demonstrates that while the market is highly concentrated, it exhibits features of complex evolving networks, providing essential data for economists and blockchain researchers interested in digital scarcity and market dynamics. Key findings

  • NFT market activity follows a power-law distribution, indicating a highly concentrated market structure.
  • The visual similarity between assets is a significant predictor of their market price and liquidity.
  • Transaction networks reveal a high degree of inter-connectivity between specialized clusters of collectors.
  • The NFT market exhibits strong patterns of digital asset maturation and classification similar to traditional physical art markets.
