This report investigates the complex trade-off between the inherent transparency of public blockchain ledgers and the competitive privacy requirements of enterprise participants. It examines how organizations can leverage blockchain’s visibility for verification and auditing while selectively masking sensitive commercial data. The methodology reviews various technical approaches, including private channels, off-chain data storage, and zero-knowledge technologies that allow for proof of validity without revealing transaction details. The paper argues that ‘transparency’ should not be viewed as an absolute binary but as a configurable parameter in blockchain architecture. It discusses the necessity of balancing public regulatory accountability with private business secrecy. The research identifies the importance of granular permissioning and auditability as key requirements for adoption in highly regulated sectors like finance and supply chain. The findings suggest that future enterprise blockchain platforms must support ‘privacy-by-design’ features to remain competitive, and that the inability to mask proprietary information has historically been a significant impediment to the widespread adoption of public-facing ledgers in enterprise settings.
