Abstract

This literature review evaluates the breadth of academic and industry research on the impact of quantum computing on blockchain-based cryptocurrencies. It synthesizes findings from current studies, identifying key areas of concern including the collapse of address anonymity, the security of private keys, and the degradation of PoW mining efficiency. The authors categorize research into three main threads: impact assessment, protocol adaptation, and the shift toward quantum-safe cryptography. The review serves as a meta-analysis, providing an overview of the consensus among researchers regarding the timeline of quantum threats and the required urgency for protocol transitions. It concludes that while Bitcoin and other first-generation cryptocurrencies are theoretically at high risk, the modular nature of second-generation smart contract platforms provides a more flexible architecture for PQC adoption.
