The Lido whitepaper outlines a protocol designed to solve the liquidity challenges associated with staking on the Ethereum Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network. At the time of its inception, staking required locking up 32 ETH, which resulted in reduced capital liquidity and high barriers to entry for smaller token holders. Lido proposes a liquid staking model where users deposit ETH into a decentralized pool and receive an ERC-20 token (stETH) in return. This derivative represents their stake and accumulated rewards, allowing them to participate in other DeFi protocols while their underlying ETH is being staked by a DAO-governed set of node operators. The paper describes the architecture of the protocol, including the minting of derivative tokens, the governance structure governed by token holders, and the security mechanisms implemented to mitigate slashing risks. By enabling liquid participation in the consensus layer of Ethereum, Lido addresses the opportunity cost of staking, fundamentally changing the economics of PoS validation.
