Abstract

IEEE 2418.1-2024 establishes a standardized framework for the integration of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies with Internet of Things (IoT) networks. Given the high volume of data generated by IoT devices and the inherent security risks associated with centralized management, this standard addresses how DLT can facilitate secure, decentralized device authentication, data integrity, and automated management. The framework defines the essential architecture, functional components, and communication protocols for IoT-blockchain integration, ensuring that resource-constrained devices can securely interact with ledgers. It covers key operational areas such as identity management, decentralized firmware updates, and the use of smart contracts for autonomous device interactions. By providing a technical blueprint for the convergence of these two fields, the standard aims to solve critical challenges such as IoT data siloing, lack of interoperability, and susceptibility to single points of failure. It is intended for hardware manufacturers, network service providers, and software developers who need to implement high-security, decentralized control planes in complex IoT environments while maintaining performance and scalability.
