Abstract

This paper serves as the second installment in an ongoing series focusing on the application of blockchain to digital identity. It moves beyond theoretical frameworks to analyze the implementation of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) in real-world use cases. The report examines how decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and verifiable credentials allow individuals to own, manage, and selectively disclose their personal data without the need for central identity providers. It discusses the critical interplay between privacy-preserving technologies—such as Zero-Knowledge Proofs—and the demand for regulatory compliance in areas like Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML). By analyzing current pilot projects in government and financial services, the research highlights the tension between the desire for anonymity and the necessity of identity verification in institutional settings. The findings emphasize that SSI is the foundational layer for a truly ‘Web3’ experience, enabling secure, portable, and user-centric digital interactions. The paper concludes by outlining the necessary standards and cross-industry cooperation required to build a global, interoperable identity layer that replaces the current fragmented system of disparate user credentials.
