Abstract

The EigenLayer whitepaper introduces the concept of ‘restaking,’ a novel primitive that allows Ethereum validators to leverage their already-staked ETH to provide security to additional protocols, referred to as Actively Validated Services (AVSs). By allowing the economic security of Ethereum’s consensus layer to be re-hypothecated across multiple external systems, EigenLayer effectively addresses the challenge of ‘bootstrapping’ security for new blockchain projects. The paper details the mechanism of pooled security, where validators opt-in to stake their assets on secondary services in exchange for additional rewards, while subjecting themselves to additional slashing conditions. The authors discuss the economic and architectural implications, including the potential for increased decentralization of the Ethereum ecosystem by reducing the need for new projects to maintain their own validator sets. However, the paper also addresses the potential risks of re-hypothecation, such as correlation risk and the complexity of managing multi-layer slashing conditions.
