Abstract

The Cosmos white paper addresses the ‘silo’ problem in the blockchain ecosystem, proposing an architecture for an ‘Internet of Blockchains.’ It introduces a modular framework that enables disparate blockchains to interoperate via the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. The system is built around three core components: the Tendermint BFT consensus engine, the Cosmos SDK, and the hub-and-spoke model. Tendermint provides a high-performance, consistent, and secure consensus mechanism for sovereign chains. The Cosmos SDK allows developers to build custom application-specific blockchains with minimal overhead. The central ‘Cosmos Hub’ acts as a router, maintaining a registry of assets and connectivity between independent ‘zones.’ This architecture allows for scalability and sovereignty, as each chain can maintain its own consensus rules while remaining part of a larger interoperable ecosystem. The paper significantly influenced the move away from monolithic blockchain design toward modular, multi-chain ecosystems, setting the standard for how heterogeneous chains can exchange information, tokens, and data without the need for centralized bridges or trusted third parties.
