Abstract

This paper analyzes the role of enterprise consortia in facilitating the widespread adoption of supply chain blockchain applications. It addresses the fundamental problem that supply chains are inherently multi-party environments requiring a shared, immutable version of the truth. The research examines how consortium-based governance models allow competitors to collaborate on the underlying technical infrastructure without compromising competitive data. By implementing shared DLT protocols, organizations can track goods from raw material origin to final consumer, effectively addressing counterfeit issues, increasing logistics efficiency, and improving regulatory compliance. The study provides a taxonomy of supply chain blockchain applications, ranging from provenance tracking to automated payment settlement. It concludes that the primary value proposition is not just digital ledger capabilities but the institutional framework of the consortium, which addresses issues of trust, data standardization, and interoperability. The findings indicate that success requires clear governance rules, shared incentive structures, and the willingness of major market participants to invest in collaborative digital infrastructure rather than proprietary, siloed systems.
