Abstract

This research explores the application of blockchain technology to address the fragmented security landscape of the Internet of Things (IoT). The study posits that traditional centralized security models are inadequate for large-scale, heterogeneous IoT networks, proposing blockchain as a decentralized alternative for identity management and trustless authentication. The author analyzes the potential for blockchain to mitigate common IoT vulnerabilities, such as unauthorized access, device spoofing, and centralized server dependency. The methodology involves a feasibility study on lightweight consensus mechanisms suitable for resource-constrained IoT devices, aiming to balance security overhead with device performance. The paper concludes that while blockchain offers a robust mechanism for data integrity and provenance, scalability remains a hurdle for real-time sensor environments. It discusses the integration of smart contracts to automate security policies, thereby reducing human intervention in network management.
