Abstract

This paper explores the evolutionary path from the Industry 4.0 paradigm to the machine economy, positioning blockchain as the connective tissue that enables automated industrial processes to interact within open markets. The authors detail how cyber-physical systems (CPS) can benefit from decentralized trust, specifically regarding supply chain transparency, automated maintenance contracts, and machine leasing. The methodology involves a historical mapping of industrial automation development, followed by a technical analysis of how decentralized ledgers replace centralized servers in manufacturing ecosystems. A key contribution is the proposal of a framework for ‘machine identity,’ allowing devices to carry their own reputation and economic history on a blockchain. The study emphasizes that the shift to a machine economy will fundamentally alter human interaction with automated systems, necessitating new forms of governance for robotic fleets. The paper argues that decentralization is not just an efficiency upgrade but a strategic requirement for the future of industrial interoperability and data sovereignty.
