Abstract

This survey provides an in-depth exploration of the challenges and opportunities associated with combining blockchain technology with the Internet of Things (IoT). The authors identify the core limitations of existing IoT architectures, such as centralized management, single points of failure, and inherent security vulnerabilities. By examining current blockchain-IoT integration models, the paper highlights how decentralized consensus can enable secure device communication and data integrity. It categorizes existing research into distinct areas, including resource management, device authentication, and secure data storage, while meticulously detailing the constraints imposed by hardware limitations in IoT environments. The authors present a comparative study of various blockchain platforms and consensus mechanisms, evaluating their applicability to heterogeneous IoT networks. The paper concludes by defining open challenges, such as interoperability and the need for standardized frameworks, while offering a clear roadmap for future interdisciplinary research in the field of IoT security and performance. Key findings

  • Blockchain effectively mitigates the single point of failure risk inherent in traditional centralized IoT architectures.
  • Lightweight consensus mechanisms are required to support the massive volume of transactions generated by IoT devices.
  • Blockchain-based authentication significantly improves device security in resource-constrained environments.
  • Standardization and interoperability protocols remain critical gaps for large-scale blockchain-IoT deployments.
