Abstract

This review paper examines the integration of blockchain within Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), focusing on operational optimization and security in manufacturing environments. The authors explore how blockchain enables traceability, supply chain transparency, and automated industrial workflows, addressing the challenges of data silos and lack of trust between supply chain partners. The paper provides a thorough analysis of how decentralized ledgers can enhance the security of cyber-physical systems (CPS), particularly in environments that demand high reliability and fault tolerance. By reviewing current prototypes and industrial implementations, the authors demonstrate the potential of DLT to streamline procurement, quality control, and predictive maintenance. The study identifies key technical barriers, including the need for high-throughput chains and integration with existing industrial protocols, while offering a vision for a future where blockchain serves as the backbone for inter-organizational industrial data exchange.
