## Abstract

The Bitcoin whitepaper introduced the first decentralized digital currency system that solves the double-spending problem without reliance on a trusted third party. Nakamoto proposes a peer-to-peer network utilizing a proof-of-work consensus mechanism to record transaction history into a cryptographically linked chain of blocks. By rewarding nodes for validating blocks, the system incentivizes honest participation while maintaining security through computational difficulty. This foundational work established the blueprint for distributed ledger technology and the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem by successfully combining cryptography, game theory, and distributed systems to enable censorship-resistant electronic value transfer.

## Key findings

* Introduced the concept of a decentralized ledger secured by proof-of-work.
* Proposed a solution to the double-spending problem using cryptographic timestamps.
* Established economic incentives for network security through mining rewards.
* Defined the core structure of a blockchain as a chain of hash-linked blocks.
