Are you a DePIN? A Decision Tree to Classify Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks

This research addresses the taxonomy crisis within the Web3 infrastructure sector by providing a standardized decision tree for classifying DePIN projects. As the term ‘DePIN’ is frequently used as a marketing label, the authors develop a rigorous set of diagnostic criteria based on physical asset deployment, reward distribution, and decentralized governance. The methodology utilizes a formal decision-making tree that evaluates whether a project is genuinely decentralizing the physical layer or simply utilizing blockchain for secondary ledger functions. Through this taxonomy, the researchers identify four distinct classes of DePIN, distinguishing between resource-heavy infrastructure and purely data-driven networks. This work provides significant value to investors and researchers attempting to filter the signal from noise in an oversaturated market, establishing a baseline for empirical assessment of project claims regarding decentralization and physical network impact. - Many projects labeled as DePIN do not satisfy the criteria for true decentralized physical infrastructure.
- Classification should be based on the source of the physical resource and the mechanism of decentralized validation.
- A clear distinction exists between human-verified and machine-verified physical data.
- Taxonomy reduces information asymmetry in the rapidly evolving infrastructure market.
