A technique allowing multiple participants to jointly compute or control a cryptographic operation without revealing their private inputs.

## Why it matters

Cryptography provides the mathematical foundation for keys, signatures, privacy, integrity, and verification.

## How it works

It uses secret sharing schemes, such as Shamir's Secret Sharing, to split a key into multiple pieces. When a transaction needs to be signed, the participants perform a distributed computation to generate the signature from their pieces. The full private key is never reconstructed, meaning an attacker would need to compromise multiple nodes simultaneously.

## Real-world example

Fireblocks and various enterprise-grade crypto wallets use MPC to secure large-scale institutional digital asset portfolios.

## Advantages

* Eliminates single point of failure
* Enhances institutional security
* No full key reconstruction

## Limitations

* Higher computational overhead
* Complex integration requirements
* Requires multiple active nodes

## Common misconceptions

* Many confuse MPC with multi-sig, but MPC creates a single signature, whereas multi-sig involves multiple distinct signatures on-chain.
* Some assume MPC makes a wallet immune to all hacks, but security still depends on node integrity.
